The Art & Engineering of Umbrellas
Recently I had the chance to give a lecture at Otaru University of Commerce in Hokkaido – called “The Art and Engineering of Umbrellas” as part of the Otaru University of Commerce English Lecture Series. I discussed my early experiences as a sculptor and my current experiences as an umbrella and parasol designer. I went over the developing designs such as the Parashell, Pumpkin Umbrella, Sakura Parasol and also showed some new designs that will be debuting in 2013. I really enjoyed the experience. My thanks go to Shawn Clankie at Otaru University for the invitation.

DiCecare Designs was recently featured on a segment of Japan’s Asahi BS. “Partner TV” is a design/lifestyle program based on the magazine of the same name.
The program covered the design philosophy and process behind creating Dicecare Design’s collection of parasols and umbrellas.
Japanese wedding Parashell Parasol by DiCesare Designs
These are some recent photos from a shoot done by Pre Marie Japon in Kobe. The White Frill Parashell works so well as a “Wataboshi” which is a traditional Japanese wedding hat worn with a white wedding Kimono called a “Shiromuku”. I was happily surprised to see how well the Parashell goes with traditional Japanese wedding attire. Special thanks to Pre Marie Japon for arranging this shoot.
